MENSTRUAL IRREGULARITIES
Abnormal menstruation often troubles many women and is also one of the most common reasons patients visit a gynecologist. However, it does not refer to a single disease; rather, it is a general term for abnormalities in the menstrual cycle, duration, or amount of bleeding. If you notice any irregular menstrual symptoms, it is recommended to schedule a medical appointment and inform your doctor about your symptoms. This will allow the doctor to make a professional diagnosis and proceed with appropriate treatment, helping to avoid delays in seeking medical care.

What is ovulatory dysfunction of the ovaries?
The main cause is an abnormality in the menstrual regulatory system (the hypothalamic–pituitary–ovarian axis), which leads to failure of ovulation or inadequate luteal function. It is commonly seen in adolescent girls, women in the menopausal transition, and women of reproductive age.

Common reasons:

・ Vigorous exercise
・ Eating disorders
・ Stress
・ Idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism
・ Lactational amenorrhea
・ Breastfeeding without menstruation
・ Pituitary adenoma or other pituitary tumor
・ Other conditions:

     - Polycystic ovary syndrome
     - Hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism; hormone-secreting tumors (adrenal or ovarian)
     - Chronic liver or kidney disease
     - Cushing's disease
     - Premature ovarian insufficiency (may be related to autoimmune, genetic, surgical, idiopathic causes, or associated with medications or radiation)

Medications:

・ Oral contraceptives
・ Progesterone
・ Antidepressants and antipsychotic medications
・ Steroids
・ Chemotherapy
