The vagina is usually slightly darker than other parts of the body, which is generally normal. Its color can range from light pink to dark brown. Common causes of hyperpigmentation include:
1. Excessive friction
Wearing tight underwear, tight pants, or sanitary pads for long periods can cause constant friction against the skin. This stimulates rapid buildup of dead skin cells and, over time, can lead to Vulvar darkening.
2. Hormonal effects
Estrogen is the primary hormone affecting the skin tone of the intimate area. Factors such as age, lifestyle, pregnancy, and stress can influence hormone levels, stimulate melanin production and cause darkening.
3. Aging
As we age, the skin in the intimate area becomes thinner, and the underlying fat tissue also decreases. This can make the area appear less plump and darker.
4. Improper hair removal
Shaving, even with lubrication, can still pull-on hair and create friction on the skin, causing damage and leading to darker skin. Hair removal creams may also cause chemical irritation or burns, making the skin more sensitive and prone to darkening.
